First Lessons of 2021

This week I received transforming news. Two important aspects in my life are undergoing a significant change. I now realize how all the preparation I have been doing for the last few years is paying off.

Here are some insights I recognized so far

1) Learning and preparing exponentially accrue

Preparing when all is well and stable is the time to do it. We have the mental and physical energy to invest time and effort. Let us not wait until our life is chaotic to start meditating. Let us not wait until our income decreases or disappears to learn how to budget. Let us not wait until we have people officially reporting to us to enhance or learn new people skills. All our effort will show up for us when we need it the most. And we will experience significant growth in the process.

2) Finishing strong trumps starting strong

Our brains tend to retain memories associated with relevant or shocking events like a transition. The way we handle that end of one stage before going to the next, will depend on the tools and skills we have at our disposal. Unfortunately, we tend to wait until the last minute before taking action. For this reason, most people end aspects of their lives in a very traumatic manner: messy divorces, nasty layoffs, overwhelming mourning, etc.

3) Empathy is powerful

Empathy is one of the most important concepts and skills I learned in the last couple of years. This week, I realized its importance and how it can deepen relationships across the board. The moment we understand where the other person is coming from, it is no longer about us, we are in a better position to forgive, and we are open to learning about ourselves and others.
